Red (Strawberry Roan / Chestnut) Roan Horse Names

Red roans have also been known as chestnut and strawberry roans as they exhibit dark brown as sometimes the red/ pinkish gene. However, in 1999, the American paint horse association defined the roans with a chestnut background as red roans and bay roans as horses with a bay background.

Grey Roan Horse Names

Gray roans is yet another popular horse coat color found in almost all breeds, not just the roan.

While other gray horse breeds lighten with age, roans do not.  Defining characteristic of the gray breeds is their gray coat that lightens as time progresses and loses its color again as they age. And just like the Appaloosa, a gray foal may not show its gray coat at birth but later in life.
